The best AI accounting software for most small businesses is the one you already keep your books in, with its AI switched on. QuickBooks Online now posts the expenses it recognizes with high confidence,¹ and Xero reconciles the bank lines it's confident about once you turn that on for an account.² Everything else waits for you, except on QuickBooks Plus and Advanced, where an Intuit bookkeeping expert also works through it each month.³ AI-native ledgers such as Digits and Puzzle go further, but you move your books to get them.
Every vendor now says "AI", and the word covers very different things: a chat box, a suggestion you click, a transaction posted for you, or a whole ledger run by software. We build Booke AI, and we read each vendor's own pages in October 2026 to pin down what the AI in each product does to the books, what it costs, and what it leaves to you.
The table shows what the AI in each product does to your books and what it costs in the US.
Software | Its AI | What the AI does in your books | US price per month |
|---|---|---|---|
QuickBooks Online | Intuit Intelligence | Posts familiar expenses it's confident about; suggests matches and categories for the rest | $38 to $340 |
Xero | JAX | Auto-reconciles bank lines it's confident about (beta); reads source documents | $27 to $97 |
Zoho Books | Zia | Suggests category, contact and account for bank lines (early access) | $0 to $275 |
Wave | Auto-updates (not called AI) | On Pro, categorizes bank imports and merges duplicates once a day | $0, or $19 for Pro |
FreshBooks | No named AI | Reads receipts; categorizing is sold through a partner, Kick | $23 to $70 |
Sage 50 | AI Document Capture | Reads, classifies and enters purchase invoices | $132.17 to $271.17 |
Digits | Digits AI | Runs its own ledger: categorizes and reconciles connected accounts | $65 or $100 |
Puzzle | Puzzle AI Suite | Runs its own ledger: categorizes, prepares reconciliations for review | $30 to $360 |
NetSuite | AI transaction matching assistant | Recommends a match for an unclear bank line for a person to review | Quote only |
ChatGPT, Claude, Meta Muse | QuickBooks and Xero connectors | Pull reports; the QuickBooks ones create and send invoices; Xero in ChatGPT is read-only; no bank-feed review listed | Your assistant plan plus your accounting plan |
Prices are list prices on the vendors' US pricing pages on October 16, 2026; several run introductory discounts.
In QuickBooks Online, Intuit groups its AI under the name Intuit Intelligence. Three parts of it touch your books:⁴
Auto-categorize, on every paid plan: expenses QuickBooks can classify with high confidence are added to your books without a click. Money coming in, loans, owner's draws, transfers, check payments and vendors you haven't used enough stay in For review. You can turn it off under Bank transactions, Settings, Familiar expenses, and undo any auto-categorized line from the Categorized tab.¹
Ready to post, on Essentials and up in the US: QuickBooks groups the lines whose history points to one clear category, and you post the group.⁵
On Plus and Advanced, an Intuit bookkeeping expert reviews and posts the high-confidence transactions each month and asks you about the unclear ones. If an accountant is attached to your file, this is off by default.³
The AI suggestions on the banking page can be switched off with Switch to previous version.⁶ Intuit Intelligence chat is in beta for admin users.⁷ Plans list at $38 (Simple Start), $85 (Essentials), $140 (Plus) and $340 (Advanced) a month.⁴
When we read 75 owner threads on QuickBooks Community and other forums in October 2026, 8 described QuickBooks' suggestions or AI picking the wrong account or the wrong match; the details are in our Meta Muse Wonder test.
In Xero, the AI is called JAX, and its main bookkeeping job is automatic bank reconciliation: it reconciles only the statement lines it has high confidence in. You turn it on for each bank account and review what it did on a Reconciled page.² It was still in beta in August 2026, and it doesn't yet split one payment across several invoices.² Smart Document Capture, on all three US plans, reads source documents and pulls their data into Xero.⁸˒⁹
Auto-reconcile is included on Growing ($59) and Established ($97), and costs $5 a month on Early ($27).⁹ JAX chat answers questions about your numbers and drafts invoices from existing records, at no extra charge, and it runs only when you ask.¹⁰
In Zoho Books, when you categorize bank statement lines, Zia suggests the category, the customer or vendor and the account, based on how you categorized before; you apply the suggestion. Zoho lists this feature as early access, enabled by emailing support. Zia also flags unusual spikes and drops in your reports, and Ask Zia creates transactions from a chat.¹¹ Plans run from free to $275 a month; Zoho's pricing page doesn't say which plans include each Zia feature.¹²
Wave's automation, which it doesn't call AI, runs on the Pro plan: once every 24 hours, Wave categorizes bank-imported transactions using their descriptions and your past choices, and merges duplicates. Auto-updates can't be turned off; each one is highlighted, and you confirm it or recategorize it.¹³ Starter is free; Pro is $19 a month.¹⁴
FreshBooks names no AI feature of its own. Its plans capture receipt data automatically from Plus up.¹⁵ For categorizing and reconciling, FreshBooks partners with Kick, a separate subscription for US users in which the software does the daily work and a human bookkeeper reviews it.¹⁶ FreshBooks also connected to Claude in September 2026.¹⁷ Plans list at $23, $43 and $70 a month.¹⁵
Sage retired its cloud product, Sage Business Cloud Accounting, in the US on December 31, 2024, and points US small businesses to Sage 50.¹⁸ Sage 50's AI Document Capture "extracts, classifies, and enters purchase invoices and credit memos."¹⁹ Plans list at $132.17 to $271.17 a month with a one-year minimum.²⁰ In the US, Sage markets its Copilot assistant for Sage Intacct, at quoted prices.²¹
Digits replaces QuickBooks or Xero with its own general ledger. Digits says it categorizes transactions and reconciles connected bank, card and payroll accounts around the clock, surfaces exceptions, and runs a close process with its agents.²² On October 13, 2026 it let customers' own AI agents create, update and delete entries, with changes to closed periods sent to an admin for approval.²³ Essentials is $65 and Core $100 a month; Pro, at $250, is listed as coming soon.²²
Puzzle also runs its own ledger and calls its Core plan "Your QuickBooks replacement". It says 85 to 90% of transactions are categorized automatically, and its agents prepare reconciliations for your review.²⁴ Plans run from $30 to $360 a month, and Core with an expert reviewing the books is $171 for up to $10K in monthly expenses.²⁴ In September 2026 Accrual agreed to buy Puzzle's accounting-firm business; the product for startups and small businesses continues as Puzzle 2.0.²⁵
NetSuite is an ERP for growing and mid-size companies, sold by quote. Its 2026.2 release added an AI matching assistant: when a bank line has several possible matches, it recommends one with its reasoning, and a person can review it before it's submitted.²⁶ Its Ask Oracle assistant is rolling out to US and Canadian customers.²⁷
ChatGPT, Claude and Meta Muse connect to QuickBooks or Xero, and each connection covers a short list of jobs:
ChatGPT's QuickBooks plugin, for US QuickBooks Online customers, reads your reports and creates and sends invoices, estimates and payment links; drafts don't go out without your approval.²⁸˒²⁹ The Xero plugin in ChatGPT is read-only.³⁰
Intuit's QuickBooks connector for Claude, US only, pulls reports, categorizes and imports transactions you supply, and creates invoices; Intuit says its uses are limited to the ones it lists.³¹
In Meta Muse, the QuickBooks connector covers reports, invoices and reminders; payroll, closing the books and taxes stay in QuickBooks, and nothing is sent without your approval.³²
None of these connectors lists bank-feed review or matching among its jobs. Our guide to Meta Muse and Intuit's other QuickBooks connectors compares them in detail.
We give AI models the same made-up month of small-business books and score their answers against 40 checks fixed before each run:
OpenAI's GPT-6.1 Sol matched 30 of 40 checks with zero wrong calls and asked about the other 10; see our ChatGPT Finances test.
Meta Muse Wonder matched 38 of 40, then 40 of 40, with no wrong calls.
Gemini 4 Argon scored 40 of 40 with its thinking setting on high, and 35 and 33 without it; see our Gemini 4 Argon test.

The models read the books well, and with write access they change them too. In a QuickBooks test company, an agent using an app key we registered made 2 writes after one sentence asking it to fix a duplicate, and an agent on Intuit's official server made 3 changes in 84 seconds after "fix my books". Neither asked first, and three read-only settings cut the second agent's changes to none. Both tests are written up in what an AI agent wrote in QuickBooks and the QuickBooks MCP server test.
Our guide to AI in accounting for small business takes the same test month task by task: what the AI sorted, matched and flagged, and the lines it left for the owner.
Which one fits depends on where your books are today:
Already on QuickBooks Online or Xero: turn on the AI your plan includes (on Xero's Early plan, auto-reconcile is a $5 add-on). In QuickBooks, review the Auto-categorized filter on the Categorized tab each week; in Xero, check the Reconciled page.
Starting fresh, or ready to move your books: Digits and Puzzle run the whole ledger with AI, and you move your books off QuickBooks or Xero.
Growing past one entity or into inventory and orders: NetSuite's AI sits inside a full ERP.
Want AI on the daily bank feed without leaving QuickBooks Online or Xero: tools that work on top of them are compared in our best AI bookkeeping software guide.
Booke AI works on the daily bank feed, including the lines the platforms' own AI leaves waiting for review. Booke is an AI Bookkeeper working directly inside QuickBooks Online and Xero, with no new platform and no new bank connections. Every day it reviews the transactions on the bank feeds you already have connected, categorizes them and matches them to existing records and documents. Unclear transactions are flagged for a human decision. Booke automates up to 80% of manual bank feed work in QuickBooks Online and Xero, for $129 per business per month. See what it does each day for small business owners on QuickBooks Online or Xero.
For a small business, AI in accounting comes in three forms: the AI built into accounting software (Intuit Intelligence in QuickBooks Online, JAX in Xero, Zia in Zoho Books), AI-native ledgers such as Digits and Puzzle that replace that software, and assistants such as ChatGPT and Claude that connect to it.
ChatGPT can review exported books and answer accounting questions, and its QuickBooks plugin can pull reports and send invoices. Intuit doesn't list bank-feed review among the plugin's jobs. In our test on a made-up month of books, pasted as exports, OpenAI's GPT-6.1 Sol model matched 30 of 40 checks with zero wrong calls and asked about the other 10.
Among AI-first options, Puzzle calls its Core plan a QuickBooks replacement and Digits invites QuickBooks users to switch; both run their own ledgers.²⁴˒³³ Owners who want a conventional ledger with AI built in can move to Xero or Zoho Books, both covered in this list.
Not for the judgment calls. QuickBooks keeps owner's draws, loans and transfers out of its automatic posting,¹ and the products in this list hand unclear lines to a person. Our guide to whether AI will replace accountants covers what changes for the work.
